  • CriticalPredator control operation in Whareorino Conservation Area

    We distributed non-toxic cereal bait pellets by helicopter on Saturday 13 June 2026. DOC will distribute toxic bait containing 1080 within a month of applying the non-toxic bait. Tracks in Whareorino Conservation Area will be closed during the toxic application. This operation is part of DOC's National Predator Control Programme to protect native species.

  • WarningStorm damage on Leitch's Hut Walking Track

    Leitch’s Track is open, however there is still storm-related damage in places. Take care, as track conditions are uneven and possibly unstable in places. Extra caution is recommended, particularly during/after periods of severe weather, as further slips may occur and track stability can be affected.

  • WarningGoat control in the Whareorino area

    DOC goat control (hunting operations) are taking place in Whareorino Conservation Area until 30 June 2026. Visitors may encounter hunting activity during this period. Exercise caution, and stick to the tracks.

  • WarningPredator control for Pirongia Forest Park and Te Kauri Scenic Reserve

    We distributed toxic bait pellets containing 1080 by helicopter on 5 and 6 November 2025 in Pirongia Forest Park and Te Kauri Scenic Reserve. It is not safe to hunt for food or have your dog in this area for up to 8 months. Warning signs and this web alert will be removed once the area is safe again. This operation is part of DOC's National Predator Control Programme to protect native species.

  • InfoGoat control on Mt Pirongia

    Hunters will be carrying out goat control in Pirongia Forest Park from 17 to 26 June. They will use suppressed firearms and working dogs. Hunters will be based at Kaniwhaniwha campsite.
