  • CriticalRoad closures on SH38 March to July 2026

    Monday 2 March to Friday 5 June SH38 will be closed between Lake Waikaremoana Holiday Park and Tuai: 8 am–12 pm and 1 pm–5 pm Monday to Saturday (6 days each week) The road will be open before 8 am, between 12 pm–1 pm, after 5p m, and all day Sundays. There will be no access to Rosie Bay Campsite or the Great Walk entrance at Onepoto Bay during closure hours. Monday 8 June to Friday 17 July 2026 Access to the Great Walk entrance at Onepoto Bay will be available for those travelling from Wairoa. SH38 will be closed between Lake Waikaremoana Holiday Park and Onepoto Road: 8 am–12 pm and 1 pm–5 pm Monday to Friday (5 days each week) The road will be open before 8 am, between 12 pm–1 pm, after 5 pm, and all day Saturdays and Sundays. There will be no access to Rosie Bay Campsite during closure hours. During the closures there will be no viable detours, so plan ahead.   • CriticalUpper Whirinaki Hut closed

    The Upper Whirinaki Hut has structural damage from recent severe weather conditions. As a safety precaution, the hut is closed. Repairs are set to begin from Wednesday 20 May.

  • CriticalTraffic Management in Waioweka/Urutawa areas

    From Monday 9 March, the Waioweka Gorge will operate under new stop/go traffic management, with delays of up to 15 min between 5–7 am and 6–8 pm, and hourly stop/go cycles from 7 am to 6 pm. The road will remain closed overnight, and access may be shut at short notice depending on conditions. Please check the NZTA website for updates and keep an eye on the weather.

  • CriticalMotu Road closed due to big slip

    The road is closed, preventing access to the Whitikau Campsite from the Southern End of Motu Road (from SH2). This affects users travelling from Gisborne and surrounding areas. The only access to the Whitikau Campsite is via the Northern end of Motu Road (SH35), until further notice.

  • WarningSouthern Whirinaki Track maintenance

    Track maintenance will be undertaken on tracks located on the Southern Edges of Whirinaki from 23 to 27 May, 2026. During this time maintenance crews will be staying in Mangakahika, Upper and Central Te Hoe Huts. Workers will be operating tools along the tracks. Visitors to this area are asked to proceed with caution.

  • WarningMaintenance on tracks surrounding the Upper Whirinaki Hut

    Track maintenance to address overgrown vegetation will be undertaken on tracks surrounding the Upper Whirinaki Hut. This includes: Plateau Rd To Mid-Whirinaki Plateau - Upper Whirinaki track Caves To Upper Whirinaki intersection Workers will be operating tools along the tracks from the 13–24 April 2026. Visitors are asked to proceed with caution.

  • WarningMoerangi Loop Track washouts

    Moerangi Loop Track contains some significant washouts due to water damage in certain areas. If you are cycling, expect to walk certain sections. As a temporary safety precaution, we recommend only riders familiar with Grade 4-5 experience cycle the track.

  • InfoBoulders Campsite access road damaged

    The campsite is only accessible by 4WD vehicles. The access road has sustained a lot of storm damage.
