- CriticalNorthern Kaimai track closures
These tracks are closed due to safety concerns from severe weather: Lindermann Loop Track – closed Waitengaue Track – closed The Tuahu Track (East) – Hot Springs Road is closed to significant slips Tuahu Track (West) – Wairakau Road is open but caution is required at a slip site, the track should not be used in adverse storm weather conditions. Te Rereatukahia Hut – the only access available to this hut is via open track entrances to the North/South Track. The Low Level Track section of the 'Low Level Loop Track' within Waiorongomai Valley is closed due to very significant slips, the rest of the track network remains open and is in good condition.
- CriticalTrack closures for kauri disease protection work
Work has begun but the following tracks remain closed: Wharawhara Tramway Track Wharawhara Link Track Te Rereatukahia Hut Track Note: Waitawheta Tramway Track to Waitawheta Hut is open. Note: Old North/South track is an expert route. The track is unmaintained and in some places unmarked. The terrain is muddy, rugged and steep and there are multiple stream crossings. Due to the terrain, be prepared to add up to 4 hours extra hiking between the two huts or find a comfortable spot to pitch a tent. This temporary access between the two huts is only recommended for highly experienced trampers.
- CriticalUpper Whirinaki Hut closed
The Upper Whirinaki Hut has structural damage from recent severe weather conditions. As a safety precaution, the hut is closed. Repairs are set to begin from Wednesday 20 May.
- CriticalWairere Falls Track section closed
The gorge section of the Wairere Falls Track is closed due to safety concerns. A large, unstable boulder is threatening a key structure on the track and there is ongoing land movement in the area. We are actively working on upgrades to critical structures along the track to improve visitor safety and experience.
- CriticalKauritatahi Hut Track closed
A significant land slip has occurred on the track to Kauritatahi Hut. The track is closed until further notice as it is blocked by heavy debris, vegetation and large boulders. Do not attempt to cross this slip.
- CriticalCrown Tramway Track partial closure
The Crown Tramway Track that forms the loop walk via Windows Walk, is closed due to landslips. This is a long-term closure. The Windows Walk is open. Return to the Karangahake Carpark by going back through the Windows Walk tunnel. The start of the Crown Track to Dickeys Flat begins after you descend the staircase from the Windows Walk tunnel.
- WarningSouthern Whirinaki Track maintenance
Track maintenance will be undertaken on tracks located on the Southern Edges of Whirinaki from 23 to 27 May, 2026. During this time maintenance crews will be staying in Mangakahika, Upper and Central Te Hoe Huts. Workers will be operating tools along the tracks. Visitors to this area are asked to proceed with caution.
- InfoNo running water at Rerewhakaaitu Campsites
There is no running water at the either Ash Pit Road or Brett Road campsites due to a problem with the water system. Campers should bring their own water.
- InfoRat bait at Dickey Flat Campground
Diphacinone, commonly known as D-Block, is being used to control rodents around the Dickey Flat Campground. The rat bait is stored in lockable bait stations for the safety of people and pets. Don’t touch these bait stations. Watch children at all times. Poison bait and carcasses are deadly to dogs – keep your dog on a lead at all times.
