Nighttime wallaby control operation for Mount Somers area and Hakatere Conservation Park
As part of the Tipu Mātoro National Wallaby Eradication Programme ECAN intend to carry out a nighttime UAV/drone with thermal search for wallabies using rifles and potentially dogs if required. This operation will occur between 2 June – 30 June 2026, depending on the weather. Mount Somers area and Hakatere Conservation Park will remain open. You are advised not to walk tracks on the days of the operation. Warning signage will be installed at all normal points of entry. Te Araroa Trail will be notified for operation around the TA trail.
